PHILIPPINES

Philippines is named after the king of Spain, King Philip II of Spain. Philippines is a vast archipelago which consists of more than 7,000 islands. The Philippines is under the Spain's rule from 1565 to 1898. Philippines cede under the rule of the United States after the aftermath on the Spanish-American War. After the long wait Philippines got its independence, but was delayed on the day when the Japanese took over the Philippines on the year 1942. A very long struggle have been experienced by the Americans under the leadership of Douglas McArthur. Philippines achieved its long awaited independence on July 4, 1946, finally called The Republic of the Philippines.*
Ferdinand Marcos who had become the president of the Philippines at 1965, who gave Philippines her most dreaded days as he declared martial law. Problems arose as his martyr enemy Benigno Aquino was assassinated. He flee for the United States and had died there. Benigno's wife Corazon Aquino succeeded Marcos. About 80 percent of the Filipinos are Catholics, and an additional 10 percent are Muslims, other 10 percent are others. Only the gospel of Christ can make a country prosper and free. *Even though it's that date, the Philippines recognized, and still, celebrate the first independence, June 12 |
INdonesia

Indonesia was known as the largest archipelago in the whole world, consisting of 13,600 islands. These islands were known for the Europeans as the Spice Islands or East Indies, known, of course, for her lot of spices, especially, the minerals. English, Portuguese, and Dutch use to come to Indonesia. Dutch ruled over Indonesia, defeating the English and Portuguese competitors, naming Indonesia, Netherlands East Indies. Indonesia was the main conquest of the Japanese, because of her mineral resources. When Japanese was defeated and then loss Indonesians declared their country independents on 1945; however the Netherlands acknowledge it on 1949.
Achmed Sukarno was the Indonesia’s first ever elected president. He was immediately thrown by the Communist-who arranged a military coup- for his dictatorship and for his policies in 1965. A general named Suharto took down the Communist successfully. Suharto’s better policies had made the country stabilized at the same time problems arose, such as, poverty and corruption. |
Malaysia

Malaysia is divided into two regions: Peninsular Malaysia (West) and Sarawak and Sabah Malaysia (East). The first traders that arrived at Malaysia are Europeans they are Portuguese and Dutch. Still, later on, the British took over and formed a colony called Straits Settlements. During the rule of the British, Malaysia prospered. Malaysia gained independence from Great Britain in 1957.When the Japanese occupation had dissolved the Straits Settlements and left forming the other Malay states into semi independent Federation of Malaysia. In 1963, Malaysia, Singapore, and some parts of Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah) were united to form the Federation of Malaysia, but after two years Singapore left and became independent. The country, still, remained prospering.

Singapore is a tiny independent country, located in the Malay Peninsula. Chinese are very strong minorities at Malaysia, so they formed an ethnic majority in Singapore. The British gained control over Singapore and formed a colony called the Straits Settlements. Singapore prospered in seaport and mining of rubber and tin. When the Japanese occupied Singapore, the British had to dissolve the Straits of Settlements and leaving Singapore as a crown colony. In 1959 Singapore gained a full independence from the Great Britain. In 1963 Singapore joined Malaysia and some parts of Borneo to for the Federation of Malaysia. Later on, after two years, Singapore left and became independent. The country, still today, is continually prospering.

Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam are considered as the part of the French Indochina, on the first half on the 19th century. When the French surrendered to Germany on 1940, Japan, the allies of Germany took over Indochina. France tried to fight back, but with the revolutionary and nationalists movements, they were compelled.
After the victory the Communist attacked Laos and Cambodia, murdering a lot of people, making it the worst genocide in the whole history. In Laotian highlands, the Communists launched a barbaric chemical warfare. Many Cambodians, Laotians, and Vietnamese fled to USA to escape and have a better life. |
